Disini Law Published in the Philippine Law Journal

Disini Law Junior Associate, Atty. Noemi M. Mejia, was featured in the latest issue of the Philippine Law Journal (PLJ).

Her Note, entitled “Persona Ex Machina: The Legal Personhood of Artificially-Intelligent Machines,” examines whether AI should be recognized as a legal person under Philippine law. As AI systems become increasingly autonomous and capable of independent decision-making, Mejia argues that traditional liability frameworks may no longer suffice for purposes of determining responsibility. The Note thus explores the benefits and risks of AI, critiques existing laws and global developments, and proposes new models—including limited legal personhood—to ensure accountability for harm caused by AI. Finally, the Note highlights the urgent need for legal reforms that can keep pace with the rapid advancement of technologies.

The PLJ is an independent and student-edited law review of the University of the Philippines College of Law. Mejia’s Note was published in Issue 3 of Volume 98 of the PLJ.

The full text of the Note may be found here on the PLJ website.
